Healthier Holidays

As much as I enjoy being around family and eating yummy holiday food, I have to balance it with healthier yet satisfying food for my belly! Today, I’ll be covering how to make delicious healthy foods that your family and friends will enjoy while at the same time saving your waist this holiday season. I will also be sharing my favorite hot chocolate recipe using peppermint essential oil and talking about the benefits of adding them to your food.

This is the first year where I had to put my foot down with discipline and being better at cooking healthier foods for the holidays.  Yet I still want to enjoy the foods that I love.  To achieve this I am taking recipes I love and changing them so they are healthier while still giving me the satisfaction of the yummy food I want.  An example is what I did with my traditional yam recipe.  I replaced the regular organic sugar for organic coconut sugar.  Coconut sugar has a lot of health benefits.   It is a natural sweetener and it is good for your skin.  Another change I made was with the homemade stuffing.  I used vegetable broth and sour dough bread and it was delicious!  If you haven’t heard about the health benefits of the sour dough bread, go back and re-read my blog where I talk about “Staying Fit While Traveling”.

I know it is hard to make healthy choices when it comes to the holiday season, where there are bags full of goodies and sweet treats but you can do it!  Make small changes to enforce the self-discipline within yourself, while at the same time enjoying your favorite treats!

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

img_90838 oz Unsweetened Almond milk or Organic Whole Milk
2 tbsp Raw Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
2 tbsp Organic Sugar or Coconut Sugar
1 drop Young Living Peppermint Vitality Essential Oil or Regular Organic Peppermint Extract

  1. Heat the almond milk or organic whole milk in a pot over medium heat (you can also microwave).  Heat milk for 2 minutes or until the milk starts to simmer, remove from heat.
  2. Put all dry ingredients in a mug and mix it together.
  3. Pour milk into mug and stir.  Once combine add a drop of peppermint essential oil and mix. Enjoy!

Using peppermint essential oil is good for so many different reasons.  It builds your immune system, clears any congestion within the chest and throat, clears any sinuses infection, and boosts your natural energy. Before you go and purchase any essential oil, make sure that you research the organization and product to see if it is digestible and one hundred percent pure.

Workout/Body Weight
Things you’ll need: resistant band, medicine ball, and jump rope

Warmup:do 3 rounds
50 Jump ropes
20 Russian twists with the medicine ball
30 Second hold side plank
10 Sit up claps
Workout: Complete 4 rounds do a minute each
Knee tucks
Overhead press using the band (place your feet on the band and as you pull away it will stretch out.  Want more of a challenge squat down and hold the band above your head and do squats with it.)
Bicycles
Burpees
Plank shoulder taps
Abs
30 V-ups
30 Windshield wipers all together
30 Leg lifts
